Bebel Gilberto CREEP cover

In anticipation of her upcoming EP Bebel Gilberto Live at the Belly Up, the Grammy-nominated Brazilian singer shares her acclaimed live cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” today with Blackbook. Recorded last summer at the legendary Belly Up nightclub in Solana Beach, CA, the album will be released on September 29, 2017 on the venue’s own Belly Up Live imprint.

Bebel Gilberto has recently started performing these intimate versions of her songs live and has been delighted by the audience response. Perhaps more remarkable has been her own experience: “I feel completely naked listening to such untouched live tracks,” says the singer. “Recording some of my favorite songs wrapped only with acoustic guitar has shown me how unique these moments can be.” As for covering of a Radiohead song, Bebel has always had a broad taste for pop music, from Prince to David Bowie to Bjork, but recording and performing this song has been a particularly profound experience. “It’s a very truthful version for me, and it only came after many late nights of singing the song alone.”

Bebel Gilberto Live at the Belly Up captures a very special, intimate performance featuring the sultry Brazilian singer and and her long-time guitarist Masa Shimizu on guitar, performing some of her fans’ favorite songs rearranged for this special show, along with a show-stopping cover of Radiohead’s “Creep”. The recording also features Bebel’s own interpretation of “Preciso Dizer que Te Amo”, a song she originally wrote and recorded with fellow Brazilian singer Cazuza, a close friend of hers until his death from AIDS related causes in 1990. The song first appeared as a duet between the two artists on Red Hot & Rio in 1996.

Belly Up Live is a digital record label launched by the beautiful beachside nightclub that shares its name. The independently-owned venue has presented a wide variety of concerts over its 43-year history, from John Lee Hooker and The Rolling Stones to newer indie faves like Lord Huron, Ariel Pink, M. Ward and Thievery Corporation. The venue also provides live music fans with professionally mixed, mastered, and edited recordings from many of the artists who play the room, including releases from The Jayhawks, Cowboy Junkies, The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band, Donovan Frankenreiter, Matthew Sweet and many more.

Hailing from a rich musical lineage, Bebel is the is the daughter of João Gilberto and singer Miúcha, and grew up surrounded by her extended musically family, including her uncle Chico Buarque and family friends like Milton Nascimento, Tom Jobim, Caetano Veloso, and João Donato.

Although she has been making music all her life, Bebel Gilberto had her first major breakthrough as a solo artist with her highly acclaimed release Tanto Tempo in 2000, introducing her now-trademark blend of electronic bossa nova and positioning her as one of the top-selling Brazilian artists in the U.S. She has has released five albums in the last 16 years, all Grammy-nominated, and all of them reflecting a life growing up with one foot in Brazil and the other New York City, infusing a modern, cosmopolitan edge to her music. She continues to call New York City home to this day.

Martin Sexton
“Outstanding taste in songwriting as well as a soul-marinated voice.” -Rolling Stone

Martin Sexton’s latest album release Live at the Belly Up features soulful lyrics, and a vocal prowess that kept the crowd hootin’ and hollering all night long. Sexton is a singer-songwriter with a genre-blending style incorporating soul, folk, blues, country, rhythm-and-blues, and rock into a feel-good tapestry of sound and story. More to the point, the man is uniquely gifted… However, there’s nothing pretentious about Sexton or his performances and it is obvious that he’s grateful to be on the Belly Up stage, to serve and delight, reminding us of where we’ve been and where we are heading, because the journey is basically one and the same for all.

Live at the Belly Up showcases Sexton’s award winning songwriting and his infectious live show. Highlights include “Diner,” “Glory Bound,” and the closing track; a soulful rendition of “This Little Light of Mine.”

Mick Fleetwood – Live at the Belly Up – Out Now

Mick Fleetwood, the iconic co-founder of Fleetwood Mac, is celebrating his blues heritage with The Mick Fleetwood Blues Band, featuring Rick Vito. As well as their own material, the band pays tribute to the original Fleetwood Mac, the blues band that started it all in 1967. Bringing together four stellar Blues and Rock musicians, Mick Fleetwood presents Live at The Belly Up, a 2-hour live album featuring 17 tracks. For a limited time, the album is on sale for only $9.99.

Mick Fleetwood Blues Band - Live at the Belly Up

At the front of the group is Rick Vito, veteran Bluesman and former Fleetwood Mac vocalist and lead guitarist. Rick adds his personal touch while staying true to the styling of early Fleetwood Mac front man Peter Green. “A lot of guys can play the licks but Rick has the tone and that’s so important in real blues,” says Mick Fleetwood.  With Fleetwood anchoring the band on percussion, the “other half” of the rhythm section is Lenny Castellanos on bass. As Mick points out, “I’ve played with John McVie for 40 years, any bassist who plays with me has big shoes to fill.” Lenny does a great job filling those shoes while complimenting Mick’s unique and revered drum style. Mark Johnstone ties everything together on the keys and backup vocals, infusing a vibrant energy to the group.

The album features Fleetwood Mac hits like “Oh Well” “Black Magic Woman” & “Albatross” as well as Blues Rock standards like “Carol” and Blues classics like “You Can’t Judge A Book By Its Cover” and “Shake Your Moneymaker.”
